Bringing a new baby into your home is an exciting and transformative time, not just for you but also for your furry family members. As a mom and dog behaviorist, I’ve witnessed the joy and challenges that come with this transition. Helping your dog respect and adapt to the new addition is crucial for a harmonious household. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth transition:
- Start Early:
- Begin preparing your dog for the upcoming changes as soon as possible.
- Strategize with your partner to align your rules, goals, and expectations.
- Create a calm association to baby-related, scents, sounds, and carriers.
- Establish Boundaries:
- Create designated spaces for your dog that will remain theirs even after the baby arrives.
- Set a boundary to the baby’s room (and yours if the baby will be sleeping there).
- Discourage the dog from playing with baby toys or sleeping on baby blankets/carriers, or under the crib.
- Gradual Introductions:
- When first coming home with your baby, greet your dog solo to relieve excitement.
- Remember that the introduction is not a one time event, introduce them to your dog gradually over a few weeks and under controlled circumstances.
- Maintain a calm atmosphere and guide interactions, be intentional in creating space and respect between the dog and baby.
- Plan Ahead:
- Who will be taking care of your dogs while you are delivering your baby and what is the back up plan if you need to extend their care?
- Consider adding doggy daycare, dog walking services, or even boarding for your dog to your Baby Shower Registry! This is a gift for you AND your dog.
- Seek Professional Help:
- Download my Bringing Home Baby Course. This lays out the Four Levels of Freedom and how to implement them during visitor hour, tummy time, physical touch, mealtimes and more!
- For a more individualized approach, I offer virtual sessions and a national network of trainers.
